Part of Hewlett-Packard's Professional Series, the DeskJet 895Cxi packs all of the essentials for SOHO (small office, home office) printing into a space-conscious, cost-efficient ink jet. Despite its compact faade, the 895Cxi is a quality unit well suited for average use. In addition to the standard parallel interface, it also comes with a built-in USB port.

Consistent with traditional Hewlett-Packard design, the 895Cxi implements a U-shaped paper path, feeding media horizontally from its input tray in the front and ejecting into the output tray just above. The input tray accommodates 100 sheets of plain paper and slides out to make loading easier. An extension arm pulls forward for legal-length sheets, and a left-side paper guide adjusts for media as narrow as three inches. The printer also features a special banner switch that lifts the output tray slightly to load continuous banner paper.

This DeskJet uses side-by-side black and tricolor (CYM) ink cartridges that are easy to insert. When you open the printer cover, the print carriage automatically moves to the center for cartridge replacement; green levers above each cartridge load and eject them. The 895Cxi prints black text at up to 600 x 600 dpi resolution and uses HP's PhotoRet II technology for color printing. PhotoRet II uses variable ink-drop sizes and special color blending to produce topnotch quality. We were very impressed by both text and graphic quality with this unit. We also found the 895Cxi to be remarkably quiet, printing in what seemed like stealth mode.

Hewlett-Packard bundles the following software and features with the 895Cxi: HP Printing Essentials CD, which includes a formatting add-in utility for Microsoft Office; PhotoRecall for digital-photograph management; sample photographic images; and more. One useful feature for users on the go is HP Instant Delivery--software that uses your Internet connection to schedule regular printing from selected Web sites. The DeskJet 895Cxi is simply a great general-purpose color ink-jet printer.
